Russian House Observes 70 Years of Russia–Nepal Diplomatic Relations

Kathmandu-The Russian House in Kathmandu on Monday hosted a gala evening to commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Nepal, bringing together senior political leaders, diplomats, academics, and cultural figures.

The event opened with the inauguration of a historical photo exhibition, “Russia–Nepal: 70 Years of Friendship and Cooperation,” marked by the traditional lighting of the Panas lamp.

Proceedings began with the national anthems of both countries, followed by congratulatory messages from Nepal’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shishir Khanal, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who sent a diplomatic telegram for the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Russian Ambassador to Nepal Aleksei Vladimirovich Surovtsev reflected on the bilateral relationship, citing the leaders' meeting at the SCO Summit in Tianjin in September 2025. He noted that Soviet-era assistance left a legacy of goodwill, providing a solid foundation for a modern, forward-looking partnership.

Anastasia Khokhlova, Director of the Russian House, highlighted the role of thousands of Nepali graduates from Soviet and Russian universities in strengthening ties. She added that a shared commitment to a multipolar world opens new avenues for trade, educational cooperation, and cultural exchange.

During the ceremony, the Russian House presented a Letter of Appreciation and a “Token of Love” to Swaraj Shakya, General Secretary of the Nepal–Russia Friendship and Cultural Association, honoring the organization’s contributions to bilateral relations.
Representatives from various civic and cultural bodies-including the Nepal-Russia Parliamentary Friendship Group, Mitra Kunj Alumni Association, and the Nepal-Russia Chamber of Commerce-also spoke on expanding future cooperation.

The evening concluded with a cultural showcase featuring traditional Nepali dances, a ballet performance of “The Dying Swan” by Yana Yeliseyeva, music by Juju Kaji Ranjit, and a rendition of the Russian song “Nadezhda” by Vera Yurchenko, followed by a formal reception.
